Statistical and video analysis has become an indispensable tool for volleyball teams worldwide, across all competitive levels, in their pursuit of performance enhancement.
Coaches leverage these technologies to gain a deeper understanding of the game, establish performance benchmarks, facilitate effective preparation, implement necessary adjustments, and provide data-driven instruction to players through graphical and video presentations.
This course empowers participants to utilize the same cutting-edge software employed by collegiate, professional, and national teams. It encompasses the collection of match data, its seamless integration with searchable video footage, and the subsequent analysis to drive meaningful improvements for your team.
Course Format
The presenter is Hugh Nguyen, former men volleyroos scout, current women volleyroos scout and head of the scouting team in Australia.
You will need to attend three short webinars before the course.
Webinars prior to weekend course
Webinar 1: Introduction to analysis - An overview of the AVSL 2024 analysis with a walk through of the tools used to perform it.

Webinar 2: Opponent scouting and match plan preparation (Participants will learn what coaches and analysts are looking for and the philosophies that many of the Science Untangled tools are built on)

Weekend Course
This course is run following the methodology used by many volleyball federation across the world. Participants will practice coding with increasing complexity. Coding will be done in real-time from a video. After each time the participants have coded a set, they will practice synchronizing the timestamp of the actions to video. This last step is essential for performing corrections and presenting gameplans with video support.
Weekend Course Day 1: Session 1:
- Quick introduction to Data Volley 4 / VolleyStation / Click & Scout and the cost/benefit of keyboard scouting vs touchscreen scouting;
- Setup Data Volley 4 / VolleyStation;
Weekend Course Day 1: Session 2:
- Serve/Reception grading practice;
- Grade Serve and reception only (no types, no location data);
- Grade Serve/Reception and first attack only.
Weekend Course Day 1: Session 3:
- Grade Serve/Reception all attacks and kill blocks. At this point, participants have achieved "match report level";
- Learn attack codes. Participants do this by swapping the "A" to the attack code;
- Code Serve/Receive attack/block with attack codes.
Weekend Course Day 2: Session 1:
- Feedback on Day 1;
- Setup Click & Scout;
- Ongoing practice.
Weekend Course Day 2: Session 2:
- Reports in DataVolley 4/ VolleyStation / C&S / Science Untangled;
- Creating Montages, searching for videos etc;
- Overview of Science Untangled suite of analytical tools.
Weekend Course Day 2: Session 3:
- Pathways to national team and pro-level volleyball.
An option will be provided for distant (out-of-state) participants to attend the course via an online meeting app. If you require this, please mention so in your registration.
